The longest, most comprehensive study ever done on aging by the Harvard Study of Adult Development has turned up some unexpected results. The study, which began in the 1930s, examined more than 800 men and women from adolescence into old age. The purpose of the research is to find clues to the participants’ behaviors that translate into happy and healthy longevity.
George Vaillant, MD, director of the Harvard study and senior physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, states that, "I had expected that the longevity of your parents, the quality of your childhood, and your cholesterol levels would be very influential. So I was very surprised that these particular variables weren't more important than they were." Another commonly held belief regarding aging well has typically included avoiding stress. However, the results from the study indicate that stressful events did not predict future health and that some people who have had a lot of stress have aged quite well despite it. The important thing seems to be how well you deal with the stress. The Harvard study also found that genetics may not play as big of a role in how well we age as do things such as not smoking or overeating, maintaining a healthy body weight, and developing good coping skills. Exercising, keeping good social connections, and being a life-long learner are additionally all precursors to a healthy longevity. In fact, the overriding conclusion of the study appears to be that we have more control over our longevity that we may have thought in the past. The older you become the more likely it is that you will be diagnosed with high blood pressure (HBP). Hypertension is a blood pressure reading of over 140 (upper number or systolic pressure), and higher than 90 (lower number or diastolic pressure). Systolic pressure is the number measured when your heart beats and diastolic is the number when your heart is at rest between beats. You can have HBP for years and not experience any symptom which is why it is known as the silent killer. HBP is the blood pushing against artery walls more forcefully (higher pressure) which is how damage is caused over a period of time. People with HPB are at an added risk for heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, and other serious complications.
Blood pressure should be checked on several different occasions over a period of a couple of weeks. Blood pressure can be checked at home with a home blood pressure measurement device or monitor. It is important that you know how to use the monitor correctly and that the cuff fits you properly. For example, a cuff that is too small may give you a reading that is higher than it actually is. Once it is established that you have suffer from hypertension, there are a number of things you can do to improve the situation. It is recommended that you:

It is an easy thing to do and this is why it helps to take some time to prepare before your next appointment. Here are some simple steps you can do to ensure this does not happen again.
First, you should stop and think about all of the concerns and questions you may have before you leave home. Think back to your last doctor visit and make a note if anything has changed in your health since then. Include any symptoms you are experiencing such as aches, pains, lack of sleep, weight loss or gain, and any mood changes. Be specific with your symptoms as to how often they occur and the severity. Write down everything you can think of that is relevant to these concerns. Now go over all the medications you are currently taking and write down the names and the dosage. Some doctors will even ask that you bring all of your medications in their containers so they can go over them. You should include any over-the-counter drugs or herbal remedies along with vitamins and eye drops. Be sure to list any allergies to drugs that you may have. Add to your list any other questions that have not been addressed up to this point. Mention any life changes you may have had since your last visit and be ready to answer questions about your diet, are you still driving, physical exercise, social activities, etc. Remember this is your health and take ownership. You and your doctor are a team working together to make sure you get the best medical care. Do not hesitate to ask for the reassurance and guidance you need to make the best decisions regarding your medical treatment. If you are ready to move from your family home into independent or assisted living, we have some helpful suggestions to help you organize and downsize your life’s possessions. Organizing experts caution that while the task may seem overwhelming, you need to create a plan, take it one step at a time, and give yourself plenty of time. If you are unable to do the work due to your health, there are professionals you can hire that specialize in helping seniors move.
It is recommended you start in one room and work from there. Recruit as much help as you can from family and friends and set up piles of items you will keep, stuff to donate or sell at a yard sale, and things you want to gift to people. Always keep in mind that your new space is most likely going to be smaller so get rid of duplicates and consider how your new lifestyle will be different from how you are now living. For instance, if you are moving into a community that offers meals, chances are you will need only the barest amount of kitchen items. The same goes for furniture. It is suggested you make a floor plan of your new place so you have an idea of the scale of what will fit. Consider selling furniture such as a coffee table or couch that seems too big and use the money toward purchasing pieces that are more suited to the size of the place. Not only will your place be more comfortable and look better, but it is important to have open pathways throughout your suite to help prevent the risk of a fall.
