At MorningStar at Dayton Place, our Reflections Neighborhood is dedicated to the specialized care of individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. We take a holistic approach to our care, which starts with the utmost respect and compassion for each resident, borne out of a deep understanding of the many pathologies known collectively as dementia, including the most prevalent, Alzheimer’s disease.
Our secure and loving memory neighborhood can provide the care your family member needs at the onset of the disease through to the most advanced stages where the highest level of care is required. The creative side of our care begins with learning about each resident. We interview the family to get a thorough understanding of a person’s history and use that knowledge to aid in their care and to develop a trust between the resident and our staff. To help control adverse behaviors associated with the disease, we use a variety of multi-sensory cues, including aromatherapy, to calm and to awaken memories, to support capabilities and to affirm the individual’s dignity and value. MorningStar at Dayton Place’s memory care offers 24/7 care, a full-time licensed nurse, and three nutritious meals daily. The Reflections Neighborhood is safe and secure environment with plenty of space for residents to move about freely, encouraging choice and independence as much as possible. Our special residents also participant in a range of wellness programs, activities and special events. The team at MorningStar works every day to make a difference in the lives of our memory care residents. We know a prognosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia is frightening, which is why we work closely with our families to help them understand what is happening to their loved one. MorningStar of Beaverton is the area’s newest senior living community, and expects to open to residents in late 2018. While we may not be up and running yet, we are reaching out to the community such as a recent workshop we hosted that is a part of our “Navigating the Journey of Dementia” series. The March 16th workshop was entitled The Puzzle of Eating.
Families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia already know that for someone with memory impairment, mealtime can be a perplexing proposition. For those with failing cognition, eating is not only a complex sequencing problem but socially stressful. Our community’s philosophy and approach to providing all-encompassing support of those with dementia takes place under our signature program “Lavender Sky,” which includes making the dining experience easier for our most tender residents. The workshop dealt with many of the common issues families and care professionals encounter while trying to encourage those with memory loss to eat. The 3-hour workshop included topics such as: the aesthetics of dining; scratch cooking whenever possible; catering to personal preferences; and dignity through choice. Furthermore, as many people with dementia experience a loss of appetite and weight loss, the discussion included the importance of serving nutritionally dense menus made from fresh ingredients and foods that promote brain health. Another thing that was mentioned is serving meals family-style may help the person remember how good it felt eating or preparing food in their own home. At MorningStar of Beaverton, team members will sit with our memory care residents to encourage appetites and enjoy one another’s companionship. We will also regularly serve meals “family–style” as residents used to eat in their own home. As many of those with memory loss have difficulty with utensils, meals include finger foods, texture-modified foods, and foods that taste as good as they look. Please contact us to learn more about our community, which will include 66 graciously appointed suites for assisted living and 38 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. MorningStar of Beaverton is proud to provide the finest senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve and we create a true home for residents in a serene setting. More and more older adults are discovering that senior living communities are the ideal place to enjoy their retirement years whether they are a senior who requires assistance or someone who is able to live independently. This is probably due to the fact that over the last several years, senior living communities have changed dramatically. Today’s modern communities are tailored to meet aging adults’ physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs and provide a comfortable and secure lifestyle.
Many seniors, especially those living alone, find themselves becoming more and more isolated as they have retired from careers and may even have stopped driving. In contrast, senior living communities offer residents a friendly place to socialize and meet new friends as well as to engage in a variety of meaningful activities. Even for someone who values their privacy, senior communities offer the comfort of having other people around. It is reassuring if you experience a fall or a medical emergency to know help is close at hand. Also owning a home means a lot of physical upkeep such as mowing lawns, shoveling snow, and other routine chores which can be difficult for seniors. The advantage to senior living communities is that someone else does the work while the residents have the freedom to concentrate on more fulfilling activities. Another common problem with seniors who live alone is that many do not eat well. Cooking may be difficult and/or they may not be able to easily get out to grocery shop. Again the problem of good nutrition is solved in senior living communities as they provide healthy daily meals designed around the needs of the residents. For older adults that have given up driving, senior living provides a safe solution. Most provide scheduled outings to places such as shopping malls, outdoor parks, plays and other entertainment venues, museums and more. MorningStar at Dayton Place offers residents a safe, comfortable place to age in place and to take advantage of resort-style amenities and meaningful activities. We encourage you to schedule a tour to see for yourself why our residents are pleased to call MorningStar “home”. It is designed for seniors who do not require 24-hour nursing care but rather just need a little assistance with daily living. An assisted living community provides a secure and comfortable environment that lets you or your loved one age in place. Furthermore, it gives family members peace of mind knowing that their elderly parent or relative is receiving the care they need.
Many communities offer a range of amenities that include private suites, libraries, theater, fitness centers as well as creative and wellness programs. Some of the services typically provided by assisted living communities are daily meals, medication management, help with bathing and dressing and transportation. With a home-like atmosphere, seniors have the opportunity for companionship and to develop new friendships and interests. Assisted living can also provide a safer option for many seniors than living alone as help is much closer at hand. According to the National Institute of Health, “More than one in three people age 65 years or older falls each year. The risk of falling -- and fall-related problems -- rises with age.” In fact, over 1.6 million U.S. seniors go to emergency rooms for fall-related injuries every year. At MorningStar Senior Living of Glendale, we think seniors are a national treasure and they deserve to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect. Our beautiful community offers a choice of 71 well-appointed, private assisted living suites, including two-bedroom, one-bath floor plans. Source:nihseniorhealth.gov/falls/aboutfalls/01.html We know that each year more than one-third of people age 65 or older suffer a fall and many of those incidents cause serious injuries or in some cases even death. This is why preventing falls is extremely important for the elderly, and balance as well as strength excises can help to prevent falls.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) recommends 5 simple exercises that do not require any special equipment other than a chair (and someone to assist you if needed) that can improve balance and increase lower body strength. The series of exercises include the following: standing on one foot; walking heel to toe; balance walk; back leg raises; and side leg raises. These easy-to-do exercises can be done throughout the day and only take a few minutes to do each of them. For further instructions on how they should be done, the NIH website offers a video on each exercise. In addition the NIH recommends that seniors try to do three other types of exercises that focus on improving endurance, strength and flexibility. At MorningStar of Arvada, we recognize the importance of exercising, and as such, will provide our residents with a full calendar of activities including well-designed exercise programs once we open in early 2018. With our large range of classes, there is something that is sure to please everyone. Examples of what our monthly calendar may include: group exercises, moving and grooving, morning strength, balance and posture, flex and stretch, relaxation and chair exercises. Other opportunities for exercising may include activities such as a walking group. This post is intended for informational purposes only. Before beginning any exercises, please consult with your health care provider. Source:nihseniorhealth.gov/falls/aboutfalls/01.html As we age, engaging in memory exercises is just important as physically excising our bodies. The Alzheimer’s Association offers recommendations on some easy ways to daily exercise our brain with activities that include reading, writing and doing crossword or other puzzles, playing games and attending events such as lectures or plays.
They state that there are four areas we can work on to help reduce our risk of cognitive decline: physical health and exercise, diet and nutrition, cognitive activity, and social engagement. In fact research has found that simply by keeping our brains active, we can actually increase its vitality and may even help to generate new brain cells. An article on the “6 simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age” from the Harvard Health Publication outlines ways to help prevent cognitive decline and reduce your risk of dementia. The article stresses the importance of continuing to learn as challenging our brains with mental exercises is “believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them.” MorningStar of Glendale could not agree more. Once our community opens in late 2018, our calendar will be loaded with activities that are not only fun but also help to stimulate our brains. Just a quick look at the monthly calendar of other MorningStar communities shows an abundance of activities such as word, board, and trivia games that help to challenge our brains. Residents at MorningStar enjoy games such as Yahtzee, trivia, Jeopardy, Bingo, Scrabble, The Price is Right, or Uno. Regardless of personal interest, our seniors will find plenty to do to keep them interested in life. With a range of activities such as reading and knitting groups, arts and crafts, and fun-filled card games, residents stay social and keep their brains active.
