MorningStar of Beaverton is the area’s newest senior living community, and expects to open to residents in late 2018. While we may not be up and running yet, we are reaching out to the community such as a recent workshop we hosted that is a part of our “Navigating the Journey of Dementia” series. The March 16th workshop was entitled The Puzzle of Eating.
Families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia already know that for someone with memory impairment, mealtime can be a perplexing proposition. For those with failing cognition, eating is not only a complex sequencing problem but socially stressful.
Our community’s philosophy and approach to providing all-encompassing support of those with dementia takes place under our signature program “Lavender Sky,” which includes making the dining experience easier for our most tender residents. The workshop dealt with many of the common issues families and care professionals encounter while trying to encourage those with memory loss to eat.
The 3-hour workshop included topics such as: the aesthetics of dining; scratch cooking whenever possible; catering to personal preferences; and dignity through choice. Furthermore, as many people with dementia experience a loss of appetite and weight loss, the discussion included the importance of serving nutritionally dense menus made from fresh ingredients and foods that promote brain health. Another thing that was mentioned is serving meals family-style may help the person remember how good it felt eating or preparing food in their own home.
At MorningStar of Beaverton, team members will sit with our memory care residents to encourage appetites and enjoy one another’s companionship. We will also regularly serve meals “family–style” as residents used to eat in their own home. As many of those with memory loss have difficulty with utensils, meals include finger foods, texture-modified foods, and foods that taste as good as they look. Please contact us to learn more about our community, which will include 66 graciously appointed suites for assisted living and 38 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
